5 Reasons You Should Choose Bamboo Over Cotton

Bamboo offers a wide variety of applications from textiles and musical instruments to construction materials and also linen. Though it may sound counterintuitive, bamboo can be used in the construction of houses but it can also be turned into soft, silky fabric. If you’re confused about the best environmentally friendly organic bedding between bamboo and cotton, here are five top reasons for favouring bamboo sheets over cotton.

1. Bamboo is self-replenishing

The magic of bamboo is that it miraculously sprouts on its own and may never need replanting. Conversely, cotton requires harvesting and replanting each year - which is quite a process. To understand more about the differences, check out our detailed comparison of bamboo vs. cotton sheets.

2. Bamboo requires no irrigation

Bamboo uses one-third of the amount of water cotton demands. Since modern farmers don’t have the luxury of adequate water for their crops, finding a self-sufficient crop is always welcome. While cotton uses over 240 gallons of water to produce one pound of fabric, bamboo requires only 12. Learn more about the benefits of bamboo in our article on bamboo sheets vs. linen sheets.

3. Bamboo uses fewer chemicals

Bamboo’s incredible growing speed and its ability to self-replenish means the plant hardly needs any pesticides or fertilisers. On the other hand, cotton uses about 25% of the world’s chemical pesticides. While great strides have been made to make organic cotton production more environmentally conscious, the process isn’t perfect yet. For a deeper dive into the materials, read our guide on what bamboo sheets are made out of.

4. Softer than cotton

Egyptian cotton is a highly coveted fabric, meaning it's expensive too. However, Viscose from bamboo has been compared to luxurious fabrics like Egyptian cotton and silk, but at an affordable cost. Additionally, this soft fabric from bamboo is hypo-allergenic and doesn’t cause any allergic reactions or skin irritations which is not always the case with cotton.

5. Bamboo smells better, is more absorbent and breathable than cotton

Bamboo contains an antimicrobial property called ‘Bamboo Kun’ which aids in reducing odour-emitting bacteria on human skin and on materials. Its ability to take in water three times its weight also makes it wick moisture away from your skin, thus leaving you dry and comfortable.

Bamboo products are geared towards comfort-driven and eco-conscious people who wish to enjoy a soft, clean and strong fabric. At Linenly, we have a wide range of soft bamboo sheets in a variety of colours and sizes. See more eco-friendly bamboo products here
